Toy-Craft. Sucker Punch and a Thrifty Hobbyist

So things with my last project have been slowed down considerably thanks to a few factors

1. Student loans and other bills
2. Finding employment
3. Saving money
4. New girlfriend
5. Travel plans with said girlfriend

Needless to say, it will be a bit more difficult for me to allocate the necessary resources to spend my money on things like solvents, glue and paint. I still try and find different ways to keep my hobby alive.

Still, I have been looking into find different ways to keep working at a few things, mostly around making vehicles and robots out of random junk. Hopefully, I'll actually have some things photographed to show here.

I LIVE! And So Does My Need to Build Crap!

I kinda forgot I had a hobby blog for a moment there...
Things here have been a little rough around the edges as far as hobby work is concerned. Unemployment and bills have made things a bit complicated for me. At the same time, I know better than to distance myself from the things I love. I start doing that, I start going crazy.
Aaaaaanyway, back to the actual topic of this post...


I've had to miss out on a lot of meetings with some friends of mine from college. A lot of these guys I haven't seen in several months, going on a year now. I really feel bad about not seeing them recently, but with a car that is dying a slow, painful death and having close to no money coming in, driving 400+ miles across the state from the Hudson Valley to Western NY is not going to happen.

Seeing this, I knew I could actually do this project to send things off to my friends.
At first, I thought about just making decently-sized robots from scrap, like in the posted link. Then I got thinking for some strange reason...

...I wanted to do this for a project for a few of my friends. With added gubbins and guns, of course...
So here I went!

The only part of this project I actually bought with the intention of hobby work in mind. It was just a cheap toy car I found at one of the local dollar stores. It's sad that I can say that there are multiple dollar stores in my home town...
Anyway, I needed to take the wheels and cheap friction motor out of the back of the car. Problem was something every tinkerer runs into: screwdriver size. I had a small panic attack until I realized I had something to counter it.

I know this looks like a really strange, cheap flashlight. However, it's what's on the inside that counts.

See those mini-drivers on the right? Problem solved!
So yeah, I'm back to work here.

So yeah. While I know the DeLorean has its tires as its propulsion, I figured I should do something different. I found the next solution in my recycling bin...

I used to hate the new design Coke made for their retro-friendly bottle caps. Now, they'll make good grav-boosters for my combat hover cars!

Here's the problem though...the caps are XBAWKSHEUG compared to the actual tires. Meh, it'll add to the aesthetic of the hover car. 
So after removing the friction engine and the wheels, I'll be able to add on the grav-boosters and add all the gubbins and bitz to the car to make it all awesome. I have further plans to base it and mount it on a pole to make it look like it's hovering. And of course, it'll be bristling with weaponry too!
Hopefully, I'll be able to get it ready for painting soon enough! It's good to model again!

Back to Basics: 40k Alternative Hobby Stuffs

Whew! This whole job hunt thing is really biting into my "find spare time for random crap" time.

Anyway, unless you've been living under a rock or are just starting to get into the world of Warhammer 40k, you may notice a lot of Games Workshop's items are rather...pricey. Coming from a college post-grad, pricey is bad. Granted, scale model building and miniature wargaming definitely do not work best for the cheap and stingy.

However, the guys at Warmaster 40k posted an article a while back concerning the common practice of finding good alternatives to all of Games Workshop's massively overpriced hobby tools and supplies.

I'm sure if you're reading this, there's nothing here that is too groundbreaking for you. However, this particular article references GW's old paint supplier, as well as a merchant selling said paint for about $1.50 each jar. Now, if you really like Citadel paints, this is a GODSEND. Check it here!

Now...off to actually do something with my army...

So yeah...

After realizing how neglected my Blogger account was, I figured it should be time for me to actually use this blog for something. I had created a new personal blog on Tumblr, but I figured that I should probably keep my personal blogging away from my hobby-related work.

So, instead of this being a RSS dumping ground, I'll be devoting this blog to my hobby work for miniature wargaming and other assorted geekiness that I partake in. I'll be posting more stuff soon, as I have plenty of new projects I'm working on!
